Mantas (meaning blanket or cloak in Spanish) are the largest rays in the world. Manta Rays cruise majestically through the open water, only venturing to the sea-bed to clean themselves. They need to keep swimming so they can breathe as the water flows over their gills. Manta rays are intelligent creatures, with the largest brain to body weight ratio of any fish. They can be identified individually by spots on the underside of their bodies.
Mantas begin life as little manta pups, all curled up like burritos! By the time they're fully grown, giant oceanic manta rays can have a wingspan of up to 7 metres across and can weigh as much as a white rhino! Reef mantas are smaller, at around 4.5 metres, but this is still pretty huge. Unfortunately these magnificent creatures reproduce slowly, which makes them vulnerable to overfishing.
